O Unjust One

Poetry

ByMamdouh Hamadeh

Like sharp corners
in the straight-edged sides,
like a point besieged
on the rim of a circle,
like a stab in the flank,
plain is my love for you,
O unjust one… O unjust one… O unjust one!

In war,
in peace,
in the rapture of life
and in the crushing grip of death,
in prison, in the grave,
in the café, on the bus,
in dreams,
a thousand years ago
and a thousand years from now,
in this world
or in the next,
everlasting is my love for you,
O unjust one, O unjust one, O unjust one!

Every pore of my body,
and the soul, since I was a boy,
and everything that is mine,
whether near or far,
loves you… loves you…
loves you alone,
forever.
It refuses that any place
should exist without you,
and forgetting is powerless
to fold you out of memory,
while you are still bewildered.
O unjust one, O unjust one, O unjust one!

Go back to your notebooks
and turn my pages,
and to the atlas of life,
and you will realize that I
alone am the one who bounds you
from the first direction
to the sixth,
that I am the only one in your history
who kindles revolutions,
who loves adventure,
and who is willing to be
the victim of the plot.
O unjust one… O unjust one… O unjust one.

How long will you toy
with my poor heart,
like a victorious army
with its routed remnants?
In God I seek help,
O unjust one, O unjust one, O unjust one!

I am the one who gave you
the reins of initiative,
and ever since you were mine
I was like rain-bearing clouds
over a thirsty meadow
scorched by the midday heat.
Why this folly,
this stubborn pride?
I am no slave,
and you are no empress.
Fear God… fear God… fear God,
O faithless one, O faithless one, O faithless one!
