A Word

Poetry

ByMamdouh Hamadeh

A word:
black
as a dark night,
it veils the windows of this world
from the eyes of the watchers;
beneath its curtain lovers do
whatever they desire,
and in its darkness is lost
everyone who searches for it
to lock it in prison.

A word:
green… like a forest,
sparrows shelter in its branches
and harvesters in its shade.

A word:
clear
as a spring,
from which travelers drink
and toward which roses stretch their roots.

A word:
like a cloud
that rains kisses on lovers,
bread on the hungry,
and whips on the executioners.

A word:
that means one thing
and means all things.

A word:
I am searching for
and have not yet found.
