The Art of Building a Dramatic Character

A good dramatic character is never born from nothing. The physiological dimension (age, build, health) determines how a character moves through the world; the sociological dimension (class, occupation, family) determines how others see her; the psychological dimension is what makes her take her hardest decisions at the decisive moment.

A beginning writer describes a character. A real writer listens until she speaks for herself.
